What is crypto?
Crypto assets are digital currencies and tokens on a blockchain — a decentralised, public ledger. Well-known examples include Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). You buy via a centralised exchange (CEX) such as Bitvavo or Binance, or via a decentralised exchange (DEX) such as Uniswap. Custody is critical: a hot wallet on an exchange is convenient but vulnerable; a cold wallet (hardware device) gives more control. Since 2024, the EU-wide MiCA regulation applies: exchanges serving Dutch customers must be registered with DNB. For Dutch tax purposes, crypto falls under Box 3 on the reference date of 1 January. Warning: prices are extremely volatile and there is no investor compensation scheme as exists for stocks.
